One machine, both seasons

A heat pump heats your house by moving heat from the outdoor air to the indoor air, the same way it moves heat from indoors to outdoors in July. The resistance strips inside the air handler are a backup that switches on during defrost cycles, after a large thermostat change, or when the outdoor temperature drops far enough that the heat pump cannot keep up alone. In Gainesville that last condition happens on a dozen or so nights a year.

If the strips are doing most of your heating, your bill is roughly double what it should be, and something is wrong: a thermostat set to emergency heat, a failed outdoor unit nobody noticed because the house stayed warm, a refrigerant charge low enough that the compressor cannot pull heat, or a defrost system that has let the outdoor coil turn into a block of ice. All of those are fixable. None of them is how the system is supposed to work.

The longer answer

Where the belief comes from

Gainesville is a college town where the median resident is 25 and two-thirds of housing is rented. Thermostats get set by people who did not grow up with heat pumps, who notice the “aux heat” or “em heat” indicator, and who conclude that those words describe the real furnace. Many of the city’s 1970s and 1980s homes also went through a period when a failing heat pump was simply left on emergency heat all winter because the house stayed warm and nobody could see the meter spinning. Both habits outlive the people who started them.

Electric heat strips glowing inside an air handler while a technician measures current
Each strip pulls as much power as a stove burner on high. They are meant to help for minutes, not run for hours.

What actually happens on a 35-degree morning

Refrigerant in the outdoor coil absorbs heat from the 35-degree air, which still holds plenty of it. The compressor concentrates that heat and the indoor coil releases it into air moving through the ducts at 90 to 100 degrees. Because the system moves heat rather than making it, every unit of electricity delivers roughly three units of heat. A strip delivers exactly one.

Around 40 degrees in Gainesville’s humid air, frost forms on the outdoor coil. The system runs in reverse briefly to melt it, the strips cover the indoor side so you do not feel cold air, and a plume of steam rises off the unit outside. Then it goes back to heating. That is the moment most people misread.

Why Gainesville suits heat pumps

The city’s heating season runs from about the first week of December to the last week of February, and even inside that window most hours are above 40. A heat pump spends nearly all its heating life in the range where it is three times as efficient as strips or a space heater. Only on the few hard-freeze nights near 28 degrees does the balance tip, and that is what the strips are for.

If GRU gas reaches the house, a furnace or a dual-fuel pairing is a fair alternative, and the utility’s conversion incentive can soften the switch. Co-op members on Clay Electric lines can collect $250 toward an efficient heat pump through the Energy Smart program. Ask about Cook’s enrollment status with both utilities when you call. What drives the cost of heat pump work

Repairs are quoted after diagnosis and before the work. Installations are quoted after a free estimate visit. The variables:

Factor Effect on the price
The fault, on repairs A sequencer or defrost board is a small job; a reversing valve or compressor is a large one
Age and refrigerant Pre-2010 systems are often R-22; parts and refrigerant for them cost more and push the repair-or-replace question
Efficiency tier, on installs Lennox equipment from single-stage up to variable-speed; the higher tiers cost more up front and less every month
Strip size and electrical Larger backup heat means a larger breaker and sometimes panel work; many older Gainesville homes need it
Ductwork Leaky or undersized ducts in 1970s-to-1990s houses may need sealing or replacement for the new system to perform
Access Attic air handlers in Duckpond and Pleasant Street houses versus garage closets in Haile Plantation or Tioga

New-system financing is offered, paid monthly, and walked through at the kitchen table; no lender or rate appears on this site. Washington’s heat pump credit is finished for anything installed once 2025 closed, so an honest quote leaves it out.

Booking a heat pump visit, day or night

Cook’s serves Gainesville and the rest of Alachua County from its headquarters in Palm Coast. A live dispatcher picks up at every hour, emergency crews run every night, and the invoice reads the same after 5 p.m. or on a weekend. For a heat pump that means the January night it stops heating is handled the same way as the July afternoon it stops cooling.

Routine work is scheduled in route blocks; a fall heating check in late October or early November is the single most useful appointment a Gainesville heat pump owner can book, because it catches the failed strip, the lazy defrost board and the thermostat parked on emergency heat before the first freeze does.

Brands

We install Lennox heat pumps, including the variable-speed systems that run quietest and hold humidity best through a Gainesville August. Repairs and maintenance cover Lennox, Carrier, Bryant, Trane and the rest of the major brands, along with the package heat pumps on older east-side homes and in student complexes and the ductless mini-split heat pumps that have multiplied in garage conversions near campus.

Steam, strips and the January night

On cold mornings my outdoor unit steams. Is something wrong?

Defrost. Frost builds on the outdoor coil when it runs below about 40 degrees in humid air, and the system briefly reverses to melt it, which releases a cloud of vapor. It lasts a few minutes and is normal. Thick ice that never clears is not; that is a defrost board, sensor or charge problem.

Is 'auxiliary heat' on the thermostat a problem?

Briefly, no; constantly, yes. Auxiliary heat means the strips are helping the heat pump, which should happen during defrost and after a big setpoint jump. If the indicator stays lit for hours on a 45-degree morning, something is keeping the heat pump from carrying the load and it is worth a diagnosis.

What is the cheapest way to run a heat pump through a January cold snap?

Set the thermostat and leave it. Nudging it up two degrees at a time avoids triggering the strips; cranking it from 62 to 72 at 6 a.m. guarantees them. Keep the filter fresh, keep leaves off the outdoor coil, and never use emergency heat unless the heat pump itself has failed.

Can we get a gas furnace instead if GRU gas runs to the house?

Yes, as a standalone furnace with an air conditioner or as a dual-fuel system where the furnace takes over below a set temperature. GRU pays a conversion rebate on qualifying switches from electric to gas heat. For most Gainesville homes a modern heat pump alone is the more economical answer, but gas is a legitimate choice and we install both.

Do heat pumps in rentals need anything different?

Mostly a thermostat that tenants cannot park on emergency heat, and a filter schedule someone actually follows. Landlords near campus often ask us to lock the thermostat’s emergency heat setting for exactly this reason.
