Newberry and Jonesville: the same road, two meters, different answers
Drive west on Newberry Road and the power company changes twice before you reach the watermelon festival. So does the rebate, and sometimes the right equipment.

Who calls us from SR 26
Three kinds of households, mostly. New owners in the subdivisions that have turned Newberry into the fastest-growing city in Alachua County, calling about a house that’s under two years old. Longtime Newberry residents in the older grid of streets near downtown and the Watermelon Festival grounds, with a system that’s seen a few renewals. And Jonesville families in the 1990s and 2000s neighborhoods between Gainesville’s western edge and the Newberry line, whose houses are now at system-replacement age.
What all three have in common is the road, SR 26, which is Newberry Road in the city and just the highway out here. What they don’t share is the power company.
Three scenarios, one month
A Newberry new build, first August. The house closed in March. The builder’s system cooled fine in spring; by August the upstairs is warm by late afternoon and the bill is higher than the neighbors’. We find the charge was set at the factory and never verified, the return in the garage air handler has a gap at the filter rack, and one duct boot in the attic was never sealed. None of it is a defect under warranty, all of it is fixable in one visit, and the bill drops.
An older Newberry house near downtown, system from the early 2000s. The heat pump trips its breaker twice on a hot afternoon. A weak capacitor and a contactor with pitted contacts; a small repair. We also note that the system is at an age where a compressor failure would make replacement the better path, and we leave a quote so the household isn’t deciding in a crisis.
A Jonesville 1990s two-story on Clay Electric. The owners want to replace before the system dies and ask about the co-op’s rebate. We do a load calculation that comes in smaller than the old nameplate, quote a Lennox heat pump that meets the rebate’s efficiency line, and walk them through the Clay paperwork. Whether a given program pays through the installer or the member is something we confirm per address. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

What the meter changes
| Meter | Who it serves out here | What it means for a new system |
|---|---|---|
| City of Newberry electric | Inside Newberry city limits | City-run programs, separate from GRU; ask at quote time |
| Clay Electric Cooperative | Most of Jonesville and rural parcels between the cities | Heat pump rebate on qualifying efficiency, free energy survey, loans incl. duct repair |
| Gainesville Regional Utilities | Parcels nearest Gainesville’s western limit | Paid duct test, energy surveys, gas conversion rebates where gas exists |
The equipment choice doesn’t change much with the meter; a Gainesville-area house needs a heat pump that dehumidifies well in August and heats honestly through the freeze window from early December to late February. What changes is which efficiency tier the rebate rewards and who files the paperwork.
How a visit goes
A Newberry or Jonesville call starts with the address and the utility, because that decides the paperwork before we arrive. Repairs: diagnosis first, price in plain words, then the work, with the common parts on the truck. Replacements: a load calculation on the house as it is now, a duct inspection, a written quote with the rebate line filled in for your meter, and a crew day scheduled in advance. New builds: a first-summer check that verifies charge, drain, duct sealing and thermostat placement while the builder’s labor warranty is still active, so anything we find can be pushed back to the installer.
What we stand behind
Every repair comes with the price before the work and a satisfaction guarantee on the work itself. Every new Lennox system is registered with the manufacturer by us, with the labor terms stated on the quote. Financing with monthly payments is available on new high-efficiency systems. And the phone at 866-266-5709 is answered 24 hours a day with no after-hours surcharge, which matters when a new subdivision’s systems all hit their first failure in the same hot week.
The drive out SR 26
Cook’s serves Newberry and Jonesville from its Palm Coast headquarters at 37 Fairmont Ln, roughly two hours and fifteen minutes door to door, crossing Gainesville on Newberry Road. The westbound run is usually the last leg of a Gainesville day, so a non-urgent visit may be an afternoon slot; a house with no cooling in July is dispatched in order with everything else.
Newberry and Jonesville callers ask
We're on Newberry's city electric. Is there a rebate for a new heat pump?
The City of Newberry runs its own electric system and sets its own programs, which are separate from GRU’s and Clay’s. As of this writing we don’t list a standing heat pump rebate for Newberry Utilities; ask us and we’ll check what the city offers at the time of your quote.
Our Jonesville house is on Clay Electric. How does the co-op's program actually work?
Clay Electric’s Energy Smart program offers a rebate on a qualifying high-efficiency heat pump, a free energy survey, and low-interest loans that can include duct repair. The rebate is tied to the equipment’s efficiency rating, and the paperwork goes through the member. We’ll fill in the equipment details.
The new houses around Newberry seem to have the air handler in the garage. Is that a problem?
It’s a trade-off. A garage air handler is easy to service and keeps the ducts shorter than an attic unit, but the garage runs hot in August and any return leak pulls garage air, including car exhaust and lawn chemicals, into the house. We seal the return side carefully on every garage install we touch.
How does Newberry's water compare for condensate pumps and humidifiers?
Newberry’s municipal wells and the private wells around Jonesville draw from the same hard Floridan aquifer that GRU does, but without GRU’s softening step. Expect scale on condensate pumps and any humidifier, and plan on an annual cleaning.
