Why the heating half of the catalog matters here

In a coastal market we spend most of a proposal talking about cooling capacity and humidity. In Gainesville, where the National Weather Service counts about seventeen freezes a year and the record low is 6 degrees, we spend real time on the heating side. A Lennox heat pump sized for the cooling load will heat the house down into the 30s; what we specify carefully is the auxiliary heat that carries it below that, and whether a gas furnace should be in the picture at all.

Gas furnaces, dual fuel and the GRU map

Gainesville Regional Utilities runs natural gas through much of the city and pays a conversion rebate for switching from electric or oil heat to a gas furnace. That makes two Lennox configurations worth considering that we rarely discuss elsewhere: a Lennox furnace matched to a cooling-only condenser, and a dual-fuel system where a heat pump does the mild work and a furnace takes over on hard-freeze nights. On a Clay Electric lot outside the gas grid, or a Newberry or Alachua address on municipal electric, the right answer swings back to an all-electric heat pump with properly sized strips. We read the meter before we recommend.

Ask which setup fits your house

Dehumidifiers and filtration for old houses and pollen months

Nearly half of Gainesville’s homes predate 1980, and many of the ones near downtown predate ductwork entirely. Those houses hold humidity. A Lennox whole-home dehumidifier plumbed into the return lets an older Duckpond or East Gainesville home run the thermostat higher and still feel dry, and it’s the real fix for the musty smell after a summer rain. On the filtration side, media filter cabinets and the Healthy Climate products earn their keep from late January through April, when the oaks and pines coat everything.

Mini-splits for the garage apartment and the converted porch

Gainesville has more accessory units, garage conversions and enclosed porches than almost any city its size, most of them near campus and most of them rented. A Lennox mini-split gives that space its own heating and cooling without tapping into a main system that was never sized for it, and it does so quietly enough for a tenant studying on the other side of the wall.

Sizing against the canopy

The last thing that makes Gainesville different is the shade. A roof under a 47 percent canopy carries less solar load than the same roof in a treeless subdivision, and a system sized from square footage alone will be too big, cycle short and leave the house clammy. We run the load calculation with the trees in it, which is why a Lennox proposal from Cook’s for a Millhopper Road home sometimes comes in smaller than a competitor’s, and cools better.

Before you pick a system

Does Lennox make a dual-fuel system that uses GRU gas only on the coldest nights?

Yes. A Lennox heat pump paired with a Lennox gas furnace, controlled by a thermostat that switches to gas below a set outdoor temperature, is the configuration we recommend most often inside GRU’s gas territory. The heat pump handles the mild winter days and the furnace takes the hard-freeze mornings.

Which Lennox products handle the February pollen best?

A media filter cabinet with a deeper, higher-rated filter does the heavy lifting, and the Healthy Climate line adds whole-house filtration for homes where someone has allergies. On the outdoor side, the answer is less a product than a habit: a coil wash before March.

Do you register the Lennox warranty for a rental property owned by an LLC?

Yes, and we do it before we leave. Registration is what extends the parts coverage, and an unregistered system in a student rental is the one most likely to need it. We’ll record the LLC as owner and send the confirmation to you, not the tenant.
